HAPPY NEW YEAR! WEATHERVANE begins the New Year with a colorful sculptural installation by Judy Thomas. A sidewalk reception for Ms. Thomas will be held from 6-8 PM on Friday January 8th in front of the gallery window. The installation is located in the garage window at 76 North 8th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This is an outdoor event.
WEATHERVANE's gallery window presents Judy Thomas’ colorful sculptural installation ‘Kaleidoscope’. Thomas work is approached with a sense of wonder and whimsy. Using simple industrial materials like PEX, vinyl, Lycra and nylon, Thomas transforms space into a sculptural environment that activates the senses. Colorful tendrils unfurl and intertwine in a weird curvilinear space, suggesting a Dr. Seussian world of ribbons or musical notes.
Underlying the playful nature of Thomas’ work is an investigation into the formal elements of color, line and form, and scientific theories of chaos and order, particle explosions, string theory and the butterfly effect. These 3-dimensional ‘paintings’ revisit 20th century abstraction through a 21st century lens.
