WEATHERVANE continues its fall season with a whimsical installation by Nathaniel Lieb. Tapestry in Yellow is from a selection of work Lieb calls Whimsies. Lieb writes that 19th century pottery workers traditionally made fanciful ceramics with their left over clay at days end. Today these whimsies are highly sought after by collectors. Lieb’s whimsies are made as entertaining sidebars to his normal work. This particular piece started as he was working through winter’s monotony on a wire basket form. As a break from it and thinking of spring, he made the individual wire flowers. Later he linked them together into a pentagonal and triangle networked pattern. Now it has arrived at its current shape after a brief stint as an electric fence. The yellow was inspired by a suggestion, and winks at Andy Warhol.
